1. look at Gustav Caillebotte’s painting Paris Street: Rainy Day. Although his painting is set in a city rather than on a seacoast, Caillebotte uses the same types of perspective.  Giving examples from the painting, explain how the artist makes use of vanishing perspective, relative size, and focus as a way of giving depth to his painting- One -two page eassy only

2. Read W.H. Auden’s “The Unknown Citizen.”  Is this a simple portrait of a happy life, or an ironic commentary on the anonymity of modern life?  Give two or three examples of how the poet uses irony. And who is the “we” in the last line of the poem?- One-two page essay only

3. What can books do that movies can’t, and what can movies do that novels can’t?  Choose at least one scene in the novel- Mystic River which is not in the movie version-Mystic River, and at least one scene which was added to the movie but which is not in the novel. Then explain why your first example was omitted, and why the second example was added.- One-two page eassay only
