The purpose of Unit 4 discussion is to understand what seems to be an inherent contradiction between two systems of belief: many Christians seem to accept modern cosmology - Galileo's view that the earth is not the center of the universe - while at the same time, they tend to disagree with evolution.

Originally, the Christian church at large convicted Galileo for heresy because of his theory. Since then, however, the church has changed its mind. For this discussion, please write an argumentative essay that analyzes the apparent paradox between the claims of Christianity with modern cosmology, on the one hand, and evolution, on the other. Below are a few questions to help you get started, though you are not required to answer all of them:

1. Why did the Church originally reject heliocentrism?

2. Why did the Church later decide to accept modern cosmology?

3. Why do Christians generally feel they cannot accept the theory of evolution?

4. Is there a contradiction between accepting heliocentrism and not accepting evolution as a theory?

5. Do you think that Christians will/can reconcile their beliefs about creation and the theory of evolution? If so, how will they do it? If not, please explain.

Points are awarded based on the quality and persuasiveness of the argument provided. Please remember to cite at least one scholarly source.

Assignment:

Essay: Read the article "The convergence of Science and Religion" by Charles H. Townes. In the Magazine Think published by IBM. The article can be downloaded from:

http://templetonprize.org/pdfs/THINK.pdf

In 400-500 words you are to summarize Townes argument:  Be sure to include:

1. What people often believe about the differences between science and religion.

2. A description of how Townes claims to show that science and religion are not all that different.

3. Do you think that he succeeds in showing that Science and Religion do not necessarily contradict one another?  In order to do this, find one source on the internet that states that there are essential conflicts between religion and science.
