 Overview

This week you will be able to choose and share an area of research related to Religion in America that interests you.    You will find two websites or other sources such as articles with high-quality information an summarize what you found on the site or in the article in at least one paragraph.  You will also constructively critique the descriptions of the resources posted by two of your colleagues.

These are your choices for topics:

1)You could use this research to inform your final paper due in ....  For example, if you want to write about the history of your family’s religion and you are Catholic, you could look at websites that provide a broad overview of the history of the Catholic church in America and its sacred texts to include as background in your paper.

2)If you want to add to our study of Religion and Education, you can summarize three key points from Chapter 6 or Chapter 7 of  the Flowers text.  If you choose this option, you do not need to do additional research unless you wish to.

3)You can look for information related to one of these topics that we have not a chance to study in depth earlier in the course and include information about it’s history in America and what sacred texts, if any, the tradition uses.  You should comment on whether you think this is an Insider or Outsider religion and what you think it’s impact on American culture has been and might be in the future.

  • Native American Religion
  • Judaism in America
  • Islam in America

Possible Resources:

Here are some resources to help you get started depending on the topic you select, but I am sure you will be able to find other reliable resources as well.  Pay close attention to the nature of the site you select to assess the quality and reliability of the information it offers.

BBC website that offers information about many world religions and their sacred texts:

Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life
