Project #88383 - Letter Writing

Writing a letter is an exercise in formality: formality of style, formality of tone, and formality of composition. Students should write a formal letter to a professor of theirs, requesting a letter of recommendation. Students should use the document on page 2 (in Block Letter Style) as a guideline for the formatting of this letter, in addition to the textbook information and information from the Module on Letters. In the body paragraphs (the message section), students should use a direct writing strategy. In the introductory sentence of the introductory paragraph, they should present the main request and the reason(s) for the request. In the content paragraphs, they should include all relevant information (why does this professor know them, why ask this professor, how well did they perform for this professor, what else did they do beside the work for this professor, what specifically do they need the letter to say, to whom should it be sent, etc.). Students should make it easy for the professor to agree to their request. In the concluding paragraph, students should state their thanks as if the professor had already agreed to do the requested letter. They should offer to keep in touch.
