Project #88935 - Mill's "Utilitarianism" - 500 Words

John Stuart Mill, Utilitarianism, chapter 2, pp 194-212

FROM BOOK: Ethics: The Classic Readings (1st Edition)

This week and next we take up the topic of Utilitarianism, also known as the "Greatest Happiness Principle" -- and who wouldn't be excited to read about that!  We will study two philosophers who write on the topic, John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham.  This week we read Utilitarianism, Chapter 2, pg 194 in our textbook.

In your Reflection this week please explain what utilitarianism is, as well as how Mill describes the quality of different types of pleasures.  Much of the text this week also discusses some of the objections made against Utilitarianism.  Please mention some of these objections and give an opinion whether or not Mill prevails in his defense of Utility.
