Project #8912 - PLE

Due by noon 12pm this afternoon

Part A (Primary Task Response):

Part 1: Please read the 5 ethical dilemmas below that are related to the healthcare field. Pick four of the five and post a 2-paragraph response for each to the appropriate Discussion Board forum regarding how you would handle these situations. Be specific regarding what you would say and what resources you would use to support the decision of your response.

Ethical Dilemma #1:

You work as a lab clerk at the local hospital. As part of your job, you compile lab results and distribute them to the appropriate physician's office. You are compiling the Occupational Health lab reports and come across your best friend's fiancé’s labs, which needed to be completed as a pre-health screening for his place of employment. In his blood work, you see that he is HIV positive. You know your best friend has no idea that her soon-to-be husband is HIV positive. What would you do?

Ethical Dilemma #2:

You are a new employee for Dr. John Jones. You have only been working there for 6 weeks and really enjoy your job. You have great co-workers and Dr. Jones is a pleasure to work for. You have been learning many of the jobs in the office and, most recently, you have been working in patient accounts. While processing the accounts, you noticed that the office manager is selecting a higher office visit than what the physician documented in the charts. When you asked her if this was just a typo, the office manager said that it is so hard with Medicare, Medicaid and all the other payers for Dr. Jones to make a profit that we need to inflate the higher level of visits to cover his office expenses. You really enjoy your job, but you specifically remember learning in school that the documentation must support what is billed and that assigning visits at a higher level is considered fraud. What do you do?

Ethical Dilemma #3:

You are a ward clerk in the Behavioral Health and Drug and Abuse Center in your local town. A well-known community celebrity is admitted with a suicide attempt from taking too many prescription pills. The news travels fast in a small town and there are many rumors speculating his admission. A national tabloid is in town to investigate the rumors and has been frequenting the Center’s parking lot in hopes of catching a glimpse of the patients. One day as you are leaving work, the tabloid stops you to see if they can interview you. You agree to see what they are interested in and they then propose to pay you $25,000 if you tell them whether this community member was admitted and the reason for the admission. What do you do?

Ethical Dilemma #4:

You are working in the nursing home of your local small town. You work nights and the RN charge nurse has been a great manager and you enjoy working with her. You have worked with her as your charge nurse for almost 3 years now and love it. One night you see her take Mr. Smith’s hydrocodone prescription and give him aspirin instead. You thought you probably saw this wrong and did not say anything. Over the next few nights at the time of medication dispensing, you see this again. What do you do?

Ethical Dilemma #5:

You are the manager of a physician’s office and it is your job to complete most of the hiring and firing (with the approval of the physician you work for). The office was short-staffed and you did not have time to post the position, so the physician’s wife offered the assistance of their niece. The niece has been working there for about 4 weeks and you are not happy with her performance. She is typically late in the morning, takes a longer lunch than everyone else, spends a lot of time on personal phone calls, and doesn’t understand how to fully run the office computer system yet. In short, she causes more work for you and the other staff than she is saving you, which was the premise of hiring a new employee. What do you do?
