Project #89576 - COMPARITIVE POLITICS ESSAY

Write an essay that is between 1200 and 1500 words (approximately five to six pages, stick to the word count!) using double-spaced, 12 point font, and 1 inch margins. Please indicate the word count at the top of the first page, number the pages and staple them together.

You are expected to draw on all the available material from readings (both textbook and other assigned articles) and class lectures and discussion. Good papers will be clearly organized, well informed on the class material, and well-written. To cite class readings, cite the author and page number in parentheses in the text. The assignment does not require outside research. If you’d like to use outside material you are welcome to do so but only if the required information is not included in class material. In this case, provide the full reference in a separate bibliography (not included in word count). No spelling or grammatical errors, please!

ONCE PROJECT IS ACCEPTED I WILL SEND YOU THE CLASS READINGS AND PRESENTATIONS.

Essay #1

You are a University of Miami senior named Megan Smith, and you have fallen in love with TWO foreign exchange students and ONE American: Hans from Sweden, Fritz from Germany, and Matt from the US. They have all proposed marriage to you and want you to move back to their home countries (in the case of Matt, move back up to Michigan) with them. You love them all equally and are happy to leave the warm weather of Miami for some cross-country skiing, which you love. You are also brilliant at languages and have become fluent in both Swedish and German through your simultaneous relationships, and so language barriers are not an issue. Instead, you plan to base your decision on where to move on what you have learned about the political and economic systems, and social policies, of these three countries in your Intro to Comparative Politics class way back in your first year at UM.

Some background on Megan Smith: You are a graduating senior with a major in chemistry and a minor in political science. You are potentially interested in starting your own company in chemical products with your husband-to-be. Incidentally, you met all three potential husbands at a party given by someone in the Business School, and they are all graduating business majors.

You are interested in having a career and you hope to combine this with having a family with at least two children, and a decent quality of life. Neither you nor any of your potential husbands comes from a wealthy family so you do not expect to receive financial support from your parents in getting started up.

A. Which country would you select, and why? Base your decision on what you have learned from the readings and class discussion of the political, economic and social policy characteristics of these three countries.

B. When you move to this country –or U.S. state- and eventually become a citizen, which political party would you vote for, and why? Why would you not vote for the other parties? Make sure you consider all aspects of the questions, and answer each part. Make sure you explain why you are making certain decisions and choosing one country over the other two.
