As we proceed through the course, the intention is for you to learn to use statistics to answer real world questions. The attached spreadsheet contains problems for you to solve which will focus on probability concepts, and how these relate to statistics. We model real world problems using statistical probability distributions. These models allow us to more easily make comparions, understand data populations, and eventually make predictions. All graphs and calculations must be shown. Data, graphs, calculations and written analysis should complement each other to make up the overall solution.

**Hint**: In working through problems that require you to compare data to a normal distribution, it is very helpful to sketch the bell-shaped normal curve. Then, place the calculated z value along the horizontal axis and shade the area under the curve about which the problem asks. For instance, if the question asks what percentage of students received less than 88% and the z for 88% is 1.7, you would shade the area to the left of z=1.7. Although you are not required to hand in your sketches, don't skip this step. You will make many fewer errors if you do the sketches, so it saves time in the long run (see pages 264-274 in Triola).
