Project #90047 - College Paper-Fantasy and Science Fiction

From the first oral and traditional forms of children's literature, the dual values of entertainment and teaching have influenced the creators of children's literature. But not all works for children are reflective of what most adults might call "the real world.” The world of literature for children and young adults is populated with talking rabbits, vampires, magic and wizardry, all of which are of great interest to the audiences, whether or not adult audiences approve of their choices.

For this essay, you will analyze one or more works from the categories of fantasy and/or science fiction. Choose one of the following options:

  1. 1-2 works of fiction from the Zipes text
  2. A work from any of the genres reviewed in Module 2. Can be selected from one of the lists of recommended or award winning works - or self selected with instructor approval

You may wish to use Table 4.1 in Lukens, pp. 102-107 for reference on the critical elements and to support your ideas. Develop your essay to respond to these questions:

  • Which aspects of character development, theme, setting and/or plot make this work believable and relevant to real world experience?
  • If this is a historic work, how does the alternate world it suggests, reflect or critique the historic and/or cultural context that produced it?
  • How does the author persuade you to believe in this "other” world?
  • What value can be gained from the "altered reality” in this work that might not be gained in realistic fiction?
  • How might this work be used to supplement and/or influence learning and development?

Remember:

  • Support your ideas with specific references to resources in the Content Guides and in your textbooks.
  • Your essay should be 3-5 pages, written in MLA style.
  • Please only use Times New Roman or Ariel 12pt font, with up to double spacing.
  • Cite all references correctly in MLA format.
  • If applicable, you may also bring in additional resources or appropriately cited images.
  • Submit your essay as an MS Word or .rtf file.
