Project #90117 - Response to others

Response to others on your opinion

  1. Moral management is a style that emphasizes on the use of moral practices. A moral manager is an individual that is dedicated to using ethical behavior in his or her personal actions. I like to think of a moral manager as someone that is aware of the right thing and cares enough to do it. An immoral manager is an individual that has no regard for any ethical principles. Immoral managers are individuals that understand what is ethical, but doesn't care enough to do the right thing. An amoral manager doesn't utilize moral reasoning in their actions. I would describe an amoral manager as someone that lacks ethical awareness.

Are their managers like the one described above working in the CJ career field? Please explain.

2. I was very interested in what this chapter had to say and also interested in how I could related the different concepts and ideas to my role in my current organization. The chapter didn't dissapoint. The first part that really spoke to me was the section that discussed Contingency Thinking and that "there is no single best way to manage people and organizations." I have often argued with other managers in my organization about ways to manage the people in our respective departments. Another section that spoke to me was the section that discussed the idea of becoming effective managers. The section defines and effective manager as focusing on two key outcomes; the first being the quality and quantity of work performed and the second being the job satisfaction of the people who are performing the work. I have always said that when workers are happy and feel like their contributions are valued, their quality and quantity of work will go up and they will be more likely to show up to work consistently.

Please explain what results are obtained from satisfied employees?

3. One of the things that I have found as far as managing employees is sometimes doing it from a distance brings out the potential in those employees that is hidden within. I have a lot of officers that have proven there selves when given the distance and responsibility needed to grow, as a supervisor we have systems that allow us to look over the officers reporting. Each location that the officers are posted on has a reporting requirement, as long as those officers complete the requirements and follow there job to the SOP they are not micro managed. If the officers reporting has issues in it we will fix it and show the officers how to correct those issues for in the future. Keeping a close eye on new officers, mentoring them, and ensuring they area conducting there job on a professional level consistent with the SOP means there are times when you have to micro manage them; however, there are times where officers catch on really fast and don't need to be managed on a trainee level. I have a number of officers that were prior military and went through the police academy right before coming into our organization, they have go to be pretty good officers needing a lot less managing. Sometimes there is a need to micro manage officers yet most of the time to let the officers get to there full potential means letting them have the responsibility to do there job.

Is there ever a time when micromanaging employees becomes an necessity? Please explain.
