Project #90796 - Discussion Assignment

This is also an ‘Individual’ activity. You are expected to act as the lead manager of an ‘Investment Club’ as a precursor to becoming the CEO of your own start-up Investment Company/ Mutual Fund/ Hedge Fund. Your answers below are expected to be of a quality and depth that would attract clients (and their money!) in the future. Remember this time you are looking after other peoples’ money and both the Government and your clients are going to be watching your performance. Plus, they are going to be really upset if you play fast and loose with their money. You have to explain all your actions in much more detail to convince them (way more than maybe you need to convince yourself!).

Each report will be posted, using the DB 8 link.

Part A (0.5 points): Clearly identify the mission and goal(s) of your Club. Explain the reasoning behind the same.

Part B (1 point): Review the recent Forbes’s list of billionaires. Select 3 of them, whose strategies differ, to study in more detail. Why did you select them? Identify in detail the initial way in which they made the big money. How do they maintain their initial wealth and make it grow? What can you learn from their investing activities?

Part C (0.5 points): What will be your investment strategy? Explain the reasoning behind the same. Support your reasoning qualitatively and quantitatively (please see part ‘E’ also as a source).

Part D (0.5 points): What will be your target return and maximum acceptable risk? These numbers could be in the form of a point or a range. If a range, what relationship formula between risk and return will you follow? Explain the reasoning behind the same. Support your reasoning qualitatively and quantitatively (please see part ‘E’ also as a source). 2

Part E (2 points): Review the postings of ALL students focusing on the returns and risks associated with their assets/ portfolios. Which 3 of these assets/ portfolios would help you the most in achieving your ‘ideal return and risk’ using the existing calculations made by them? Re-calculate the returns and risks of these 3 assets/ portfolios using the last 6 months data. Are these numbers still in keeping with your ‘ideal return and risk?’

Part F (0.5 points): How would you rebalance your portfolio if required? Explain the reasoning behind the same. NOTE: If you do this DB sincerely it could provide a path for you in real life. Of course a side benefit is that you be all set in terms of prepping for the final exams too.

Due date Your posts to “Weeks 8 & 9” DB must be done by: Wednesday 11.50 PM ET of week 10 viz. 11/04. If you do not post your responses on time, you will earn a zero as your DB credit for the DB. Partial credit is possible for parts posted within allotted time period. Points This is a graded assignment worth 5 points. You are expected to take advantage of: all the discussions and related portions of the text (so review them and relate your answers to what you have learnt over the weeks); and, any students’ DB postings – including your own – to get ideas as well as to minimize new number crunching. Adding in any personal experience is always encouraged (NOT just ‘gut feelings’ but real life experiences please). NOTE: Your responses must be posted on the DB itself and NOT as an attachment. The attachments are restricted to supporting copies of articles, supporting data and tables, calculation tables etc. Also NOTE: Please send BB mail or come to ‘Chat’ for help!
