Instructions for Writing the Expository Essay (Signature Assignment)

What is an expository essay? In an expository essay you try to explain something to your audience. You begin by reading what your text has to say about a particular topic and then study the available literature related to that topic. Then you form a thesis statement based on your understanding of the material, and explain and support that thesis. The thesis statement should appear at the end of the first paragraph of your essay.

What is a thesis statement? You can think of your thesis statement as the answer to the subject you are trying to explain. Remember that a thesis statement is not the first thing you come up with when writing your essay. It is the result of reading and thinking about the topic of your essay. After collecting and organizing the information about your topic you can develop your thesis statement. As you conduct your literature search, be mindful of conflicting data. Below are two examples of thesis statements for expository essays.

Length: The body of your essay should be (5) pages in length, excluding the title page, and the (optional) figures, graphs, or bibliography. Add three additional pages: (1) title page, (2) abstract, and (3) references. If figures, graphs or drawings are included, the paper should not exceed 10 pages. Trim our all unnecessary words (very, basically, being that, etc.). Please review the details listed in the grading rubric below to note the level of quality expected.

Topic and Content: Your paper will set forth a current issue of concern in society, and will explain how at least three different schools of thought in the history of psychology have influenced current thinking and practices in that area.
The thesis (main idea) of your paper must be explaining the way in which three historical figures or schools of thought influenced the field of psychology as we know it today.

For example, if you elect to write an essay on Discipline in parenting (a current social concern) you might explain how the Psychodynamic, Behavioral and the Humanistic movements in psychological history have contributed to attitudes and practices today.

If you want to discuss Artificial Intelligence, you could address how structuralism, Gestalt psychology and cognitive psychology have influenced the creation of this field of study.

You must use at least five respected sources of information, one of which may be your text. The others should be professional journal articles, web sites from academic or government institutions, and books. Information cited in your paper must be appropriately referenced with APA style in-text citations and reference page listing. WIKIPEDIA, allpsych.com, about.com, and other third-party sites are not professional references. Consult with the National University library or writing center if you need guidance as to what are professional publications.

What to Include in Your Essay: (1) title page, (2) abstract, (3) an introductory paragraph that includes your thesis statement, (4) body of the essay that includes a review of literature that explains, supports, interprets, and analyses your thesis, (5) concluding paragraph that summarizes your thesis, interpretations, and original conclusion, (6) reference page, and (7) an optional appendix with graphs, photos charts or drawings. Check your work against the grading rubric below.

Writing: Your paper should be written in your own words. Do NOT copy and paste from other documents or web sites. Quotations should be used very sparingly and only when absolutely necessary. Papers will be checked against Turnitin.com using the SAFE ASSIGN feature in Blackboard. Plagiarism is grounds for failure.

Save your work often. Save as a Microsoft Word document. Use a file name which includes your last name and a unique title. For example, "Rogers 426 my role in history.doc".

Format:  The paper must be submitted as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or .pdf or .rtf format document using a 12 point font and double-spaced.  Use 1 inch margins. Follow general APA guidelines as presented in the Little Brown Essential Handbook for Writers or the APA Publication Manual.  Number pages in the upper right hand corner.
