Project #92188 - The Futures of the Grid

Due at 8:00pm Central Time

Short Answer responses – aim for 1-2 paragraphs. Enough to convey clear answers and demonstrate information learned from the material.

1)              Describe the various challenges and opportunities for the electricity ‘grid’ over the next two decades.  Where might we see innovation in maintaining the grid’s viability?  Where might we see the grid challenged by innovation?

In your answer be sure to describe the range of issues – political, economic, technology and end-user experiences.

2)              What type of solar power (CSP, thin film, crystalline photovoltaics, passive solar) makes the most sense for central utility power generation?  What type do you think works best for distributed power generation? Of the various types of solar energy systems, which do you think have the most potential to move forward (central or distributed)?

3)              Describe the new competitive dynamics of distributed power generation – both based on fuels (e.g. fuel cells) and onsite electricity (via micro wind; micro solar).  Describe why advocates believe distributed power is ‘disruptive’ in terms of our current central grid model.
