10 questions from Obama's America by Ian Refowitz book on chapters 1-2.

1. Explain the two political extreme positions with regard national identity issues. How do they differ?
2. Why does Obama reguse to totally identify with Frederick Douglass "Fourth of July" approach to nationalism? Also, for that matter, with Malcolm X or Du Bois.
3. Describe how two other countries accomidate or do not accomodate a multi-cultural ethic.
4. "There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americans" (Theodore Roosevelt.) How do you interpret this?
5. Why was the Civil Rights Movement so important?

Chapter 2:

1. Describe the radical or extreme (what Reifowits also describes as "hard") multiculturalism? How does this relate to Afro-Centrist Leonard Jeffries.
2. What from this chapter do you learn of Arthur Schlessinger? Where does he stand on the issue of multiculturalism according to Reifowitz.
3. What do you gather form Reifowitz where the Christian Right stands on multicutural identity politics.
4. How does Reifowitz describe "Bening Multculturalism."
5. There seems to be very little difference between "Bening Multiculturalism" and "Democratic Pluralism." In either case- do you think it can work or, as has been proved in the past, an impossibility. Any attempt only cayses division in the country.
