Project #93535 - Response

Response to others on your opinion:

1. I found several concepts in this chapter interesting and as I often do, I wish my boss's boss would read a chapter like this. There was a brief period in which we were allowed to offer our subordinates the ability to flex their time. In my department, the amount of unscheduled leave usage plummeted and staff were visibly happier. When we got a new boss, he made everyone go back to working the same hours. Coincidentally, our unscheduled leave usage skyrocketed and staff are no longer satisfied in their jobs. Because I work in a prison, the ability to implement some of the ideas that the chapter discusses is limited. However, flexing time for the administrative staff is an easy one that definitely works. Another idea that I know works is to sincerely praise, or thank your employees. I was in a meeting with my department heads this afternoon discussing ways that we can make our employees feel valued. An employee who feels that their contribution is valued will work their butt off for you.

A company has decided to throw a tremendous party for all of its employees to show its appreciation for the highly successful year that has just concluded. It plans to hold the party at a fancy place with live entertainment and expensive food. The affair will be quite a bash. In fact, it is expected to cost over $100 per employee. What is your reaction to this idea?

2. The strategies and processes utilized to building a successful team is the nucleus of and maps the blueprint of teamwork. We look at all successful teams, may they be military, law enforcement, sports organizations, Apple, and other organizations that have outstanding track records identifying periods where they dominate or have dominated in their respective fields. This week's team assignment is an excellent example of those processes and strategies that were agreed upon, during the construction and implementation of team charters. This identifies how things should be done, what should take place during a conflict or disagreement, where all will provide equal portions of assignments, while building trust in one another. I have been on teams, where members fail to pull their fair share of an assignment, driving other members of the team to have negative thought of that member. As stated, trust is a very important part of any team, especially when lives are at stake or on the line.

Do you like working in teams? Explain why or why not.

3. Coming from someone who has been in teams throughout my career, I completely agree with you that team members greatly impact the outcome of any task. It is extremely important that each team member puts forth the effort needed to compete tasks, as well each person has a different outlook and a different opinion on every subject. Each member of a team can provide a detailed section to any subject or task, this in many cases makes any task easier and more productive as well as the possibility of completing a task a lot faster than an individual having to figure out the work on there own. Military works in teams because most task are easier and more productive once completed in a team, not to mention the while working in a team we all tend to work closer and become more knowledgeable about one another. One of the things that I have always found appealing about working in teams is it builds relationships that work better the more you work together.

In most organizations, not all teams develop to the performing stage. Is development to this stage necessary for effective team performance? Explain why or why not. Provide examples.

4. I was not aware that there were definitions for the different methods of making decisions in a group until I read this chapter. As I read the chapter I was able to identify parallels with the decision making that occurs in my own work team. I supervise six managers and two other department supervisors and was in a meeting yesterday in which we used five of the six methods that were described to make decisions as a group about some issues that we faced as a team in our prison. There was only one decision that I made using the Authority Rule because the group couldn't come to a decision. In the end, the majority of the team agreed with the decision and the others didn't really object, they just didn't know which way the group should go. As a team leader and a manager I much prefer Decisions by Unanimity, but as the chapter says, it does take longer to make decisions that way

What are the advantages and disadvantages of group decision making? Provide examples from your agency.
