Compare & Contrast

When you compare and contrast a topic, you make a point and serve a purpose. You clarify what is unknown or not fully understood and put a new perspective on a controversial idea to bring one or both sides into a sharper focus. You do not have to give each side equal representation—you can be biased while asserting your opinion.

By drawing such conclusions regarding two different perspectives of the same topic, you are critically thinking and making connections between texts or ideas while thinking beyond summarizing each piece to generating new and interesting analysis. When you analyze comparisons (similarities) and contrasts (differences) you broaden your knowledge of the topic, determine its significance in society, and decide where the topic fits into your respective world.

Assignment Details:

Review the two articles listed below for this activity and write a report that addresses the following questions:

  1. What is the overall opinion represented in each article? Why should we care about the similarity and differences between the two articles?
  2. Why is this topic being compared, and what is being measured?
  3. What do you think the purpose of each article is and who is the intended audience?
  4. Do both authors use statistics and surveys to support their position or do they both use quotations from eyewitnesses or experts? Be specific.
  5. How does each author try to sway the reader to his or her side? Are the words slanted to one side of the issue or the other? Are there differences in the tone of the articles and, if so, how does this affect you as a reader?
