Project #94385 - sociology discussion - GLOBALIZATION DISCUSSION

###due after 12 hrs###

Debate about whether it is the responsibility of the U.S. to provide aid to developing countries or to provide assistance during times of war or natural disasters (what are reasons for both sides of the issue -- "yes it is the responsibility" or "no it is not the responsibility").   Should the U.S. focus its efforts on domestic issues such as poverty instead? If we are globally interconnected, then would it be fair to say that it's no longer their problem -- rather it is a world problem?

Initial posting must be at least 250 words and contain at least one supporting citation.

two of my classmates' posts:

1.This is a very difficult question to answer because I am all for the United States helping other developing countries during times of war or natural disasters but I do not think they can go and do that when they cannot help or fix problems that are happening back home. We as a country can not be going and helping others fix their problems when we have problems at our own hands. Foreign ad is something that everyone wishes to do because it is the moral thing to do, but it does not always go as smooth as it should. As for the United States, we have many issues to address before taking over and helping developing countries. "..United States has a greater rate of inequality than any similar country"(Carl 2013: 256). As much as the United States wants to help others out they should hold it off until we as a country are complete. As of right now the United States has been facing many social problems and issues that have not been taken for account for. If we are globally interconnected I think it is fair to say that it is a world problem rather than their own problem. It is like being on a team, whether it is sports, cheer, or dance. If one part or person is not doing good, then the whole team is not doing good. You wouldn't let your teammate do something wrong without you going in and helping them out. Being interconnected globally means that each and every country should have each others backs for when they fall and have issues. It is no longer a their thing but an our thing.

2.  The answer to the question of whether or not the US should be involved in providing aid and assistance to developing and war-torn countries is unquestionably, yes. First and foremost it is our moral responsibility as human beings to look after our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Aside from the moral implications and responsibilities, the economies of countries have become more intertwined than ever before through globalization (Carl: 2013).

The US benefits from doing business with other countries by way of cheap-labor to make inexpensive goods and use of their natural resources.  Taking what little resources an underdeveloped country has- whether it is labor or property and turning a blind eye to the socioeconomic struggles of that country is exploitation.

The US must of course carefully choose its battles and weigh the consequences. Not having a relationship with or compassion for other countries in need or conflict can have dire consequences. Consider WWII, the pollution in Beijing and most recently the Ebola virus outbreak. The problems that other countries face-, pollution, disease and/or conflict will eventually reach the US. It is just a matter of time.

This is not to say that there isn’t much work to do here in the US. There are some very serious and complex social problems (poverty, racism, sexism to name a few) still that must be addressed. However, globalization creates many of the world economic hardships (Carl: 2013). As one of the countries controlling a majority of the world’s total wealth, we have a responsibility to aid the less fortunate.
