Project #95087 - final research paper

1.     Final Research Paper: 30% (Due Dec 3rd)

The final research paper should have between 7-10 pages of content, excluding the cover and reference pages.  The paper will require material from outside sources (at least 5 peer-reviewed journal articles) and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the research topic.  Both in-text citations and references should be completed using APA format.  See https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ for helpful hints and examples.

(See Research Paper Grading Rubric on the next page for more details on how the paper will be graded)

Research Paper Grading Rubric

A (95): Well-written, critical analysis of topic.  The student demonstrates an understanding of supportive literature, but does not spend excessive time summarizing those points.  The student clearly explains the topic using correct APA format in the body of the text and in the reference section.  The paper is within the limits specified (7-10 typed, double-spaced pages, 1 inch margins).  The style of writing is clear, concise, and creative.  No spelling/grammar errors.

B (85): Competently written research paper.  The student shows understanding of issue, but may spend too much time summarizing or quoting original arguments.  The style of writing is clear and to the point, but may lack creativity.  There are few spelling or grammar errors.

C (75): Minimally acceptable, passable paper.  The student does not demonstrate a good understanding of the references, but at least choose an appropriate scholarly article.  The student may make few errors in APA-style referencing.  The paper may not meet the minimum length requirements or may be excessively long (+/- 1 or more pages).  The style of writing may lack clarity and there are usually spelling and/or grammar errors.

D (65): Inadequate, poorly written paper.  The student’s writing is frequently tangential/off the point.  The student chose non-peer-reviewed references (e.g., books, non-scientific online resources) and makes significant errors in APA-style referencing.  The paper does not meet the minimum length requirements or is excessively long (+/- 1 or more pages).  The style of writing is vague or unclear and there are several spelling and/or grammar errors.  The paper may be excessively late.

F (0): Paper not completed.

Standard deductions

-5 points per day late

-5 points for each page less than the required page length

-10 points for significant spelling/grammar errors

Note that there will be papers that fall between these categories and will receive grades accordingly (e.g., B+ = 88).
