Project #95967 - 28 week 3 discussion

Concepts of Pathophysiology

In this Discussion, you reflect on how understanding pathophysiology relates to the role of a public health professional and why it is important to be knowledgeable of these concepts. The mechanisms of carcinogenesis, the immune system, and inflammatory processes are three of the most overarching, intertwined, and important pathophysiological concepts in the area of human biology. Understanding these concepts is fundamental to health education and promotion activities relating to both chronic and infectious disease.

Your Instructor uses the Module 3 Discussion Rubric to grade this Discussion.

By Day 2 of Week 5: Begin Discussion of at least one of the topics below. By Day 4 of Week 5, choose a second topic to discuss. Continue to engage in Discussion with your colleagues through Day 7 of Week 5.Although you may wish to discuss all three topics, make sure that you can achieve sufficient depth in doing so in the one-week time period.

Topic A

Explain why it is important for a public health professional to understand the immune system. Some things you may consider as you discuss this topic: How would you help a person who was resistant to the idea of vaccination understand the risks as well as why a particular vaccination is important for them or for their child? What are the challenges and progress made surrounding a particular type of vaccination that interests you? What are some ways that the "hygiene hypothesis" is relevant to public health? What role does the "gut" play in the immune system and what lessons can be learned from research in this area? What articles can you find that help you understand immune system concepts? Be sure to cite, in APA format, any articles you discuss.

Topic B

Explain why it is important for a public health professional to understand the pathophysiology of inflammation. Some things you may consider as you discuss this topic: What diseases are strongly associated with inflammation and what public health policies, programs, or interventions may improve these inflammation related health outcomes? Do you think that understanding the role of inflammation should be a part of health education aimed to any particular population and if so, which one and why? Should more money be advocated for programs that relate to preventing behaviors that result in inflammation or should more money be spent on treating inflammation? Which one do you think would save more lives and why? What articles can you find that help you understand inflammation related concepts? Be sure to cite, in APA format, any articles you discuss.

Topic C

Explain why it is important for a public health professional to understand carcinogenesis. Some things you may consider as you discuss this topic: Which do you think is more important for the development of any particular cancer: genes, aspects of the physical environment, or behavior and why? Would you rather put programmatic money for cancer prevention towards changing a behavior, screening for a particular kind of cancer, or treatment, and why? What promise might cancer vaccines hold for a particular type of cancer? What articles can you find that help you understand carcinogenesis concepts? Be sure to cite, in APA format, any articles you discuss.
