Project #96339 - Response to others

DQ responses for Week 5

  1. Response: I thought that the section on Organizational Learning was very intriguing. The chapter discusses Organizational Learning as if an organization is an entity unto itself. As a manager in a fairly large organization I can understand the idea that the organization as a whole learns to accomplish things in certain way. This depends on the type of organization, the structure of the organization, the strategy of the organization, and the environment that the organization is in. In the section on how organizations acquire knowledge, the chapter talks about mimicry. I related that to when I was an instructor. When a person first becomes an instructor, they learn the material to the extent that they are barely competent to teach it, later, after they have taught the material for a while and related it to every day job functions, they become infinitely more competent in the subject matter than when they first learned it.

Organizational Behavior can be a very powerful tool that can be employed by today's managers to improve their department and the company as a whole. What parts of OB do you feel would be the most beneficial to you as a manager and why?

  1. Response: I feel the most beneficial part of OB for a manager is Technology.  In today's society, technology is utilized to gather all sorts of information from which websites people shop at, what people are buying these days, and technology can provide charts on when people buy the most or when they do not.  Operations technology is a combination of knowledge, resources, and techniques that create a product or service output for an organization.  Organizations rely heavily on technology to give them the information they desire.

Please explain.

  1. Response: In my organization it seems like we are never able to simply manage the department, we are always in the mode of changing something. Some of the changes that we have had to manage have been major changes and some of them have been minor, what is often lost on the staff who are impacted by the change, and probably not communicated very well by management, is that changes are not implemented just for the sake of change, but they are implemented in an attempt to solve some problem that has been identified. Some problems are identified from within the organization and some problems are identified from external sources. Whatever the source of the problem, it is our job as managers to implement the change in such a fashion that it fixes the problem with the least amount of negativity as possible.

Why do people in organizations often develop cynicism about change initiatives? How will you as a manager deal with change within your organization and your department? Please explain.

  1. Response: This was a better chapter to read the 2nd time around, (we read it in week #1). There were a few things that stuck with me this time that didn't really resonate in week #1. The first concept that stuck with me was the paragraph on External Adaptation. The paragraph discusses goals and tasks to be accomplished, methods to accomplish the goals and how to cope with success and failure. Employees of any organization need to know how to cope with the organization's environment and they do that by sharing experiences with other members of the organization. Another part of this chapter that stuck out was the idea of shared values. Shared values include an understood sense of the informal rules and expectations so that employees and managers know what is expected of them. One of the problems in my organization is that there is a perception by line staff, and some managers, that there is a good-ole-boy system of promoting to the operational levels of management. Not too long ago a person was promoted to a position in our organization who it was widely believed did not earn the position. Ever since that time, he has had a hard time getting things done in the positions. I believe that the organization did not follow one of its own cultural rules by promoting this person too fast

  2. Question: Steve wrote.....................Shared values include an understood sense of the informal rules and expectations so that employees and managers know what is expected of them. Please share some of the informal rules that exist in your organization.
