Project #96505 - Concert Critique Essay

Every student will attend and submit a description of a live “classical” concert. The term "classical" in this case refers to Art Music as opposed to Popular Music.

Please talk to your instructor about what constitutes an approved event for this assignment. Consult with me before you go to the live event of your choice.

Your critique should be in the form of an expository essay of at least three paragraphs. The opening paragraph should describe your reaction to the overall concert, including general information about the event such as the location, performers, and choice of music on the program.

The body paragraph(s) should give evidence to support why you reacted to the concert the way you did. Mention specific pieces from the program and details about the pieces that support your opinion, focusing on the elements of music that we have discussed this semester in class. Your examples should give the reader a complete idea of what the concert was about.

Include only TWO musical elements for half of the pieces on the program in your writing. If the concert consists of large multi-movement works, write about half of the material in the performance, e.g. Acts I & II of a three act opera, or Movements III & IV of a four movement symphony.

For a piece such as Mozart’s Symphony no. 40, one could write the following: The concert opened with the first movement of Mozart’s Symphony no. 40. The piece begins in a minor key. It is written for strings, woodwinds, and brass, and is played in a fast Allegro throughout.

The closing paragraph should sum up your opinion of the success of the event (e.g. how well the performers worked together as a group, and the overall effectiveness of the performance for the audience) and the evidence supporting your opinion.

For example your closing paragraph could be: The concert was a remarkable success. The musicians performed each work with an enormous amount of emotion as well as technical skill. The choices of repertoire made the concert as a whole very enjoyable for the listener. Everyone there seemed to have benefited greatly from coming to the event.
