Project #96537 - Atomic Bomb

The people involved in the development of the atomic bomb were a varied and very interesting group.  This paper will focus on one of the central people involved should analyze his or her role in some key event or some particular aspect of the Manhattan project or how the person’s personality and past history affected events.  Alternatively, the paper may focus on the relationship of  2 or 3 of the central people involved and how this relationship affected events.

Example topics:  Oppenheimer’s Style of Scientific Leadership; Feynman and Scientific Computing at Los Alamos; Klaus Fuchs and Nuclear Espionage; Bohr as a Scientific Celebrity and His Access to People of Political Influence; Fermi and the First Nuclear Reactor; Bethe versus Teller in the Theory Division;  The Odd Couple: Leslie Groves and J. Robert Oppenheimer.

The paper will require research outside of the course materials.  You are expected to use several external references and to cite these properly.  Referring to Rhodes and and lecture is insufficient. In addition, the internet has varying amounts of correctness. If you find something on a website try to track down the source of the info. If you can't find out where they got it from, it may not be trustworthy.

The paper should be 5-8 pages in length. To define the length standard use 11pt font, 1.5 spacing, and standard margins. Similar mechanics requirements as the Copenhagen paper. Your target audience is a peer in this class. You do not, and should not, spend much time on restating background covered in class.

Successful papers will show evidence from several sources to substantiate the thesis of the paper. The reader needs to see for his/her-self that the cited sources do support the thesis. Main points should therefore be accompanied by quotations from source materials along with description of how the evidence supports the thesis.

The grading rubric will have a form similar to:

Evidence of Outside research: /10

Clear and Appropriate Thesis: /5

Focused Body (everything pertains to the thesis): /10

Cited Evidence appropriately used (discussion of evidence shows understanding, evidence supports thesis): /10

Shows how chosen person or people fit within the Project as a whole: /5

Mechanics: /5

Style (Show, don't tell as well as other considerations): /5
