Project #9683 - Anthropology

DUE: On the Last day of LECTURE at the beginning of class (NO EXCEPTIONS)

This assignment is to be a SHORT, ethnography of some aspect of “our culture. In brief you are to explore a “sub-culture” or group within the local population, with which you are unfamiliar!  An example of such an exploration would be: say you are not a sports fan, go to a game and observe the crowd, or a segment of the crowd and their behavioral patterns… maybe you want to look at language utilized by ‘soccer moms’ at a high school game. Other places could be specific bars (if you are straight go to a gay bar if you are gay go to a straight bar), or go to a different type of church/temple (if you are Jewish go to a Catholic mass if you are Catholic go to a Jewish Temple), you could go to a tattoo parlor, or a club meeting or a help-group like overeaters anonymous.  Have a plan, think of a question beforehand and plan an observation… outline what you are going to look at and what you think that will tell you. Whatever you choose you must conduct yourself courteously and professionally, you are not there to judge, just to observe. BE CREATIVE, BUT BE CAREFUL, DO NOT PUT YOURSELF OR YOUR SUBJECTS AT RISK. You must be respectful to your ‘subjects’ do not be intrusive, be observant; do not be insulting, be inquisitive; do not be overbearing, be polite; do not slack off, be interested! Use this assignment to broaden your perspective, explore the unknown, or hone your understanding of our complicated culture.

Your observation can last as little as a few hours our as long as a few evenings… I DO NOT WANT YOU TO DEVOTE TOO MUCH TIME TO THIS! The duration of your observation(s) is dependant upon your ability to invalidate/test your hypothesis. The end result of this project is a TYPED, double-spaced, paper (In a font of reasonable size and type, e.g. Times New Roman 12pt). THE LENGTH OF THIS PAPER IS NOT TO EXCEED 6 PAGES!!!!!! I will stop reading at sixth pages regardless of whether you have made a point or not. The paper should flow as follows:

Introduction:

Background of the subject/study…what is the big picture?

Introduce your study… why is it important?

Hypothesis… what are you testing (your question), and looking at (your data)?

Methods: How did you go about your project research?

Data: What did you observe? WITHOUT INTERPRETATION

Results: What is the significance of your data? Was there a pattern? E.g. Do soccer mom’s only seem to swear if it is in response to something involving their child ONLY?

Discussion: How do the results reflect your hypothesis, do they support your idea or must you reject your idea/hypothesis.

Conclusion: How does YOUR work reflect the “background” of your study… how does it relate to the ‘Big Picture’?

The above is a general outline, try to hit each of these points, they need not be in separate paragraphs, structure your paper as you feel best. Be brief, at best you should write about a 4 page paper, if you can do it in less, fine, but do not exceed 6 pages.
