Project #97020 - Huntington Library and Gardens in San Marino

This assignment required you to explain Huntingtong Garden, I will provide the full handouit also some notes for this assignment.

The Japanese gardens at the Huntington estate consist of three different forms: pond and stream (built in 1912), the dry rock garden (1968) and the tea garden (2012). All three were envisioned as examples of “authentic” Japanese gardens to be made available in the West for the Huntingtons, their guests and today the general public. Based on your knowledge of Japanese garden architecture as described by the Heian aristocrat Tachibano Toshitsuna, what formal elements of a proper Japanese garden can be found in the pond and stream garden at the Huntington? Does the Huntington do an adequate job of conveying elements of a Japanese garden to the American public? What elements detract or buttress ideas of the authentic? Moreover, is it possible to have an authentic Japanese garden outside of Japan?
