Ashford University Assignment Submision Week 1 Assignment

The Closeness Communication Bias

Read the article Close Relationships Sometimes Mask Poor Communication. Then, write a two-page paper (excluding title and reference pages) in which you do the following:

  • Summarize the article.
  • Describe a miscommunication you have had with someone close to you simply because you assumed that they understood you? What happened?
  • Using course materials, explain how you can make sure that this kind of miscommunication does not happen in the future. Or when it does happen, what could you do to make your communication more clear?

Be sure to reference the article and at least one of the other course readings from this week in your paper. This can be your textbook or one of the recommended articles. The paper must be formatted according to APA style. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center.

Week 2 - Assignment

Ashford University Assignment Submision Week 2 Assignment

Computer Mediated Communication

For most of us, computer-mediated-communication (CMC) is a big part of our daily lives. For the purpose of this assignment, we will include your cell phone as a type of “computer.” In this assignment, you will reflect on your CMC.

First, read Chapter 4 in Bevan and Sole. Next, monitor your cell phone and/or computer-use during the course of a single day. Please download and save the Save icon CMC chart and make a note each time you check an email, text, play a game, or even check the time. Keep track of all of your personal and work-based communication activities through the course of a day and write everything you did on the provided chart. Keep track of the type of communication, length of time of your engagement, and the roles of both verbal and nonverbal communication in the interactions.

As you take notes on your chart, ask yourself:

  • Was there any implied meaning in the text of your writing? Did you ever use emoticons or use all caps?
  • In your written messages, how do you try to convey tone without nonverbal cues?
  • In your spoken messages, how do you think you could have been clearer if those messages had been written?
  • What connections can you make between your activities and the various functions of language and non-verbal communication discussed in Bevan and Sole (Sections 4.1 and 4.2)? Please list and describe at least one function of language and one function of nonverbal communication and show how those functions are demonstrated in your day of interactions.

Sample Notes

Work email – used emoticons and exclamation points to lighten the tone; careful with formal language and typos as this can be read that as careless or incompetent; saw responses to me with exclamation points and emoticons (nonverbal); like in table 4.7 in our text, I noticed I tried to clarify I understood others by saying things like "Are you saying that ...?" If I were with them, I'd read body language instead.

When you write your paper, focus on specific interactions like the example used above or comment on general-use patterns. Then, based on what you have learned in Bevan and Sole, answer the following questions:

  • How much time in a single day do you communicate with your phone, computer, or both? Why does this matter?
  • Why should we pay special attention to our CMC?
  • What function of nonverbal communication did your interactions illustrate? How important was nonverbal communication in all of your computer-mediated interactions? Or, how did the lack of nonverbal communication allow you to think about a function of nonverbal communication?
  • What function of language did your interactions illustrate? How important was verbal communication?
  • What advice from Bevan and Sole could be used to improve your computer-mediated-communication?

Do not worry if you end up missing a few of your interactions. However, the more details you collect, the better your evidence will be to support your points. If it turns out you do not do much computer-mediated-communication, focus on the costs or benefits of primarily relying on verbal (and/or spoken) communication.

Copy and paste your complete CMC chart to the end of your paper.

The paper

  • Must be two to three double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must use the course text to support points.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Final Paper Outline

Before beginning this assignment, review the Document icon Final Paper instructions. You will see that you will be writing a letter of advice for a couple or group of co-workers, using the first five course learning objectives of this course. This assignment is designed to get you to create a plan for doing that final assignment that will be due in Week Five.

The course learning objectives you will need to cover are:

  • Explain the principles of and barriers to effective interpersonal communications.
  • Analyze the role of communication in developing and maintaining one’s self-concept, self-image, and self-esteem.
  • Differentiate appropriate levels of self-disclosure and emotional intelligence in various relationships.
  • Describe strategies for using communication techniques to resolve interpersonal conflicts.
  • Analyze the impact of gender and culture on interpersonal communications.

This week, you will write an outline for your Final Paper. You must use the Document icon Outline Template as the basis of your outline.

The outline must contain

  • An introduction with thesis statement. Please visit the Ashford Writing Center for more details and see the following web pages in particular:
    • Introductions and Conclusions
    • Thesis Generator
  • All learning objectives, with details about how you plan to address each. Please be sure to explain how you plan to support all of your key claims with evidence. Here, you don not have to write full body paragraphs, but you must give your instructor a sense of how you plan to cover each objective with course materials, independent academic research, and personal experiences that correlate with those key points.
  • A conclusion. The conclusion should restate the overall perspective offered in the paper, with a restatement of the thesis and the central points outlined in the paper.
  • A reference page containing at least three academic resources. You should find at least two of these resources independently in the Ashford University Library. To get started, review the following resources. And if you need further assistance, please contact the Ashford University Library.
    • Video icon FindIt@AU Tutorial
    • Video icon Keywords are Critical

Remember, you will need to cite your sources in order to get credit for the use of course and academic materials, which is part of how you will be assessed. If you do not understand how to do this, please review the resources provided above. If you are still having difficulties, contact your instructor. You will receive feedback on this draft so that you can make the necessary improvements for your Final Paper submission during Week Five.

Week 5 - Final Paper

Ashford University Assignment Submision Week 5 Final Paper

Letter of Advice

For this assignment, you will write a letter of advice to either a newly engaged couple or a group of coworkers. Imagine that either the engaged couple or coworkers hear that you are taking a course in interpersonal communication and want advice regarding how to communicate in their personal or professional relationships. Based on what you have learned in this course, what advice would you give them regarding how to communicate effectively? How can you use what you have learned in this class to offer a couple or group of co-workers advice to have more positive relationships? Write your paper in the form of a letter. Please review the Document icon Sample Final Paper.

Instructions
Use the list of learning outcomes to write your letter. The course learning outcomes you will need to cover are:

  • Explain the principles of and barriers to effective interpersonal communications.
  • Analyze the role of communication in developing and maintaining one’s self-concept, self-image, and self-esteem.
  • Differentiate appropriate levels of self-disclosure and emotional intelligence in various relationships.
  • Describe strategies for using communication techniques to resolve interpersonal conflicts.
  • Analyze the impact of gender and culture on interpersonal communications.

For each of the five learning outcomes, create a separate heading that states the learning outcome that you are addressing. Then, address the following for each segment:

  • Explain the principles of and barriers to effective interpersonal communications. Why do the principles matter? How can your couple or group of co-workers overcome the barriers you have listed?
  • Analyze the role of communication in developing and maintaining one’s self-concept, self-image, and self-esteem. Begin by defining each term and then explain how these three notions of the self potentially impact your couple or group of co-workers relationship. What advice can you offer to help them develop a positive self-concept or build each other’s self-esteem?
  • Illustrate the importance of self-disclosure and emotional intelligence in various relationships. What role does self-disclosure play in your couple or partner’s relationship? How can their relationships be improved by them becoming more emotionally intelligent?
  • Evaluate strategies for using communication techniques to resolve interpersonal conflicts. Explain one or two potential conflicts and then present at least two strategies for addressing the dispute(s).
  • Analyze the impact of gender and culture on interpersonal communications. First, define these two key terms. Then, explain the importance of gender and culture in relationships generally and for your couple or group specifically. What advice can you give to become a better communicator based on the information you have presented?

Content Requirements
You must address all five of the learning outcomes and the questions listed with those objectives. For each objective, be sure to define key terms and relate those ideas directly to advice for your couple or co-workers. The point here is for you to demonstrate how these ideas can be utilized to help people in their relationships. Try to offer specific advice they can integrate into their lives.

Begin your paper with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement and that previews what you plan to cover in your paper. If you are having problems writing a thesis, try using the Thesis Generator.

End with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis and restates your key points.

You must use at least five scholarly sources to help you make your points. Three should be course readings and two should be academic articles you have found yourself through doing research in the Ashford University Library. If you need help doing research, visit the Ashford University Library, which can be accessed through the Library tab in the left-navigation menu, in your online course.

You must also draw on personal experience to offer advice or to illustrate points. It is acceptable to use hypothetical examples and/or your personal experiences for either your couple or group of co-workers. We simply want to see that you can apply what you have learned to some potential “real world” experience.

The Final Paper

  • Must be eight to 10 double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must use each learning objective as a header that separates each section of the paper.
  • Must use at least five scholarly sources, two of which can be found in the Ashford University Library.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Final Notes
This is a formal paper and should utilize proper grammar, complete sentences, and paragraph transitions. However, you will write this paper in the format of a letter to the newly-engaged couple or group of co-workers. Feel free to address the people you select directly throughout the paper.
