This is a five to six-page paper, excluding references. Choose one area of course content that you think you have learned or mastered this semester. You may also choose a topic related to the family that we have not studied. (For example, parents in prison.)
Describe and document the area. In your own words, draw from at least two course readings and two outside readings to describe the area. Show linkages between this area and other areas of our class. How does this area relate to other courses you have taken? Acceptable outside readings are textbooks from other classes, scholarly research articles from professional journals, and government internet resources. If you use outside sources from the internet, only government (federal, state, local) sources will be accepted.
Remember, four references are the minimum number of references for this assignment. Papers with the minimum number of references may earn a C for this assignment. Papers with 5-6 references may earn a B for this assignment. Papers with 8 or more references may earn an A for this assignment.
Include a reference section or page of sources you used in the paper. Reference format in the paper: Cite work by author(s) and date, not by the name of the article or source. This can be done at the beginning or the end of a sentence:
“Park and Gomez (2003) found that….. The reference can also be done at the end of a sentence. For example: As children of divorce get older, researchers found that they still manifest difficulties associated with their parents’ divorce (Park & Gomez, 2003).
The total assignment is worth 40 points. You will earn 5 points for submitting your topic, references, and outline for the paper. The paper itself is worth 35 points.
GRADING RUBRIC FOR PAPERS
Writing guidelines on this outline must be followed at all times in papers. Points lost for writing errors will be based on the guidelines. Points will be lost if there is inaccurate information in your paper or discussion. If the organization of the written work on the papers makes it hard to follow, points will also be deducted for this. Main criteria:
1. Rich description and documentation of key points with material cited from the reading(s) and stated or written in your own words. Your discussion/paper integrates the required reading with other readings. Your paper shows original thought. You draw on two or more authors for each major point, rather than one main author. 33-35 points
2. Contains description and documentation of points with some citation in your own words. There may some original thought but tends to rely on sources’ description. 28-32 points
Contains documentation with some inclusion of key concepts or points. Lacks integration of multiple sources’ views. Draws heavily from one source in one or more sections. 24-27 points
Brief, general, and/or containing inaccuracies. Does not draw on at least 4 sources.
Includes information about oneself or someone known to the writer, contains personal opinion, rather than drawing on sources. (When giving your opinion, you must integrate it with what you have learned in class about the topic.) Too brief, inappropriate sources, inaccurate information, overuse of quoted material, excessive writing errors, and failing to meet the requirements of this assignment. 20 or fewer points.
